The header image will be output to a printer and to avoid pixellation it should be of a sufficient size to print at good quality on a 300dpi printer across a standard sheet of letter or A4 paper. So a width of around 2000px (or more) is necessary. The uploaded image will always be scaled full width between page margins, so bear this in mind when designing your header image. For instance if you would like your logo to be in the top left corner you should add white space to the right to avoid the logo being stretched full width and pixellating.
The depth dimension will scale in proportion. So if your image is 2000px x 200px your header will be full width across the page and extend down by a tenth of the width of the page.
